Plan a getaway to a NASCAR short track racing event!

NASCAR Short Track Racing

  • Tracks are under 1 mile in length
  • Tracks can be asphalt or dirt, flat or banked
  • Most short track racing events take place at night

Some tracks offer a regular lineup or racing and some just open up for a few big annual events – either way, they tend to draw crowds out to enjoy these exciting races.

North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee Short Tracks

Bowman Gray Stadium (Winston Salem, NC)

Stay Near Bowman Gray Stadium for Saturday Night Racing – This Winston Salem, North Carolina football stadium offers exiting quarter mile flat oval short track racing.

Known as NASCAR’s first and longest running weekly track, Bowman Gray Stadium features weekly Saturday night racing throughout the spring and summer months.

Visits to two nearby car/racing museums, Kernersville Auto Museum and RCR Museum, can round-out a NASCAR-themed weekend.

North Wilkesboro Speedway (North Wilkesboro, NC)

Stay Near North Wilkesboro Speedway Paved oval .625 mile short track in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

Here’s an interesting bit of information – North Wilkesboro is where the first Lowes Home Improvement Store was located (Mr. L.S. Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware).

Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, TN)

Stay Near Bristol Motor Speedway for the Spring & Fall NASCAR Weekends – The famous 0.533 mile oval track in Bristol, Tennessee hosts big racing weekends in April and September.

You’ll want to make plans early for these, because things book up fast.

Richmond Raceway (Henrico Co, VA)

Stay Near Richmond Raceway – D Shaped paved short track located in Henrico County, near in Richmond, Virginia.

Richmond has plenty of other attractions to offer visitors, including Maymont Mansion and the Lewis-Ginter Botanical Gardens.

Martinsville Speedway (Ridgeway, VA)

Stay Near Martinsville Speedway This Ridgeway, Virginia track was one of the first paved short track ovals.

Enjoy a visit to this historic race track and, while you’re in the area, plan a visit to the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

Dirt Oval Short Track Racing

Eldora Speedway: The Big E (Rossburg, OH)

Stay Near Eldora Speedway – This half-mile banked clay/dirt oval located north of Rossburg, Ohio offers a regular schedule of night racing from late April into October.

The track is currently owned by NASCAR legend Tony Stewart

Short Track Racing in Iowa

Iowa Speedway (Newton, IA)

Stay Near Iowa Speedway – Oval short track in Newton, Iowa.

While you’re in the area, pay a visit to the Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, IA)

Stay Near Knoxville Raceway Semi-banked half mile dirt oval in Knoxville, Iowa. The track is located at the Marion Country Fairgrounds.

The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum is located next door.

Indianapolis Short Track

Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park (Brownsburg, IN)

Stay Near Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park – Not to be confused with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the annual Indianapolis 500 is held. Indianapolis Raceway Park, in Brownsburg, Indiana, about 10 miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis, features a road coarse, drag strip, and 686 mile oval track.
