Broadway’s Cort Theatre Renovated & Renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre
The Cort Theatre on 48th Street in New York City’s theater district has received an extensive renovation and is now the James Earl Jones Theatre.
The Cort Theatre was renovated during the pandemic closure. The $47 million project restored the historic theater space and added a modern annex, making room new dressing rooms and rehearsal space for performers and improved accessibility, improved sightlines, and additional restrooms and lounges for theater-goers.
The renaming comes is part of an effort by Broadway theater owners, producers, and directors to promote equity. Later this year the Brooks Atkinson Theatre will be renamed the Lena Horne Theatre.
James Earl Jones is an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) who has appeared in 21 Broadway shows.
The first show to play at the newly named theater is “Ohio State Murders” starring Audra McDonald.
