NYC Getting a Broadway Theater Addition
Plans are under way to renovate the Hudson Theater on West 44th Street and add it to NYC’s list of active Broadway Theaters. In order to qualify as a Broadway theater, a theater must have a minimum of 500 seats and be located in Manhattan’s Theater District (West 40th to West 54th Streets, between 6th and 8th Avenues). Theaters at Lincoln Center, which is located on Broadway, but north of the traditional district boundaries, are also considered Broadway Theaters. There are currently 40 Broadway Theaters, and the Hudson will be the 41st.
After renovations, the Hudson will seat around 950 theater-goers.
The Hudson was actually opened as a Broadway theater in 1903 and hosted shows until 1968. Since then, it’s has several other uses, including movie theater, a music venue, and an events center.
