Best Hotels for Theater-goers in New York City

There are some real advantages to staying right in the heart of New York City’s theater district. When you stay in a nearby hotel, you can walk to and from the theater (saving on expensive cab fares), there are plenty of restaurants in the area that offer special pre-theater dining (they make sure your meal is served in time for you to make it to the theater in time), and you’ll be close enough to the theater box offices to stop by in the morning to check on the availability of discounted “rush tickets“.

Here are some favorite hotels for enjoying theater in New York City:

New York Marriott Marquis –  Located right on Broadway, between 45th and 46th Streets.  Within easy walking distance of Broadway theaters.  The Minskoff Theatre, where “The Lion King” is playing, is right next door. The Imperial Theatre (“Les Miserables”) and The Music Box Theatre (“Pippin”)  are about a block away. Sardi’s, Junior’s, B.B. King’s Blues Club, and other well-known restaurants are nearby.  This hotel actually has a theater, The Marquis Theatre, in the same building. The Marquis Theatre is where “The Illusionists” will be make it’s Broadway debut.

Best Western Plus President Hotel at Times Square – Located on 48th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue.  Close to many theaters, including the Longacre Theatre, where James Earl Jones in currently starring in “You Can’t Take It With You.”

Hotel Edison – Located in the heart of the theater district on 47th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Just down the street from the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where “Love Letters” will be playing this fall.

Hotel Novotel New York Times Square – Located on 52nd Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue.  This hotel is on the same block as the Neil Simon Theatre, where Sting’s new Broadway musical, “The Last Ship” will open this fall, and across 52nd Street from the Neil Simon Theatre is The August Wilson Theatre, home of the hit musical, “Jersey Boys.”  Just one block south on 51st Street is the Gershwin Theatre, home of  “Wicked.”

The Hilton Garden Inn Times Square – This hotel is located on 8th Avenue, between 48th and 49th Streets and is adjacent to The Eugene O’Neil Theatre, where “The Book of Mormon” plays.
